About Eyedro the Dry Eye Specialists

Who are Eyedro?

Our founders met whilst studying for their Optometry degrees from Bradford University many moons ago. Having had a research paper published as students, they have now seen first-hand how professional habits and methods of managing certain conditions can lead many clinicians to not want to “rock the boat” and to let the status quo continue.

As Optometrists we have seen over 75,000 patients for Primary Care Eye Examinations and we have seen Dry Eye Disease is on the rise across all ages!

Why Eyedro?

Time and time again dry eye symptoms are the primary reason for people attending a sight test and yet advice and management of the condition is often glossed over at the end. Largely due to time constraints, dry eyes are forgotten about and over time neglected leaving the customer with a feeling of “nothing can be done so just put up with it”.

But it does not have to be that way, dry eye and inflammation of the eyelids commonly known as Blepharitis are most definitely treatable conditions. Our founders who themselves are Blepharitis sufferers researched the treatments and found that these specialist treatments had been scientifically proven to work abroad.

When problems have been ignored the glands in your eyelids can become chronically blocked and if not caught early enough, they will start to die. This is known as meibomian gland dysfunction or MGD. Once a gland is dead there is no treatment however each eye has around 50-70 glands and the earlier the treatment starts the more glands can be saved. Some limited research has found that gland death is reversible but with very small sample numbers which makes us a little sceptical!

It is believed approx. 86% of dry eye sufferers have MGD (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction)

The founders then made a commitment to bring these treatments to the East of England and made a significant investment in the equipment and training required. Having tried the equipment on each other and friends, and noticed a real positive difference they now offer this service to the public, in a setting where Dry Eye and Blepharitis are the sole focus.
