Digital Eye Strain – The Facts

People of all ages are spending an increasing amount of time in front of the screens of digital devices. This has led to an upsurge in reports of eye strain. Digital eye strain (also known as Computer Vision Syndrome) is a very real phenomenon. Let’s take a look at some of the science behind the causes and treatments for this Twenty-First Century affliction.

Causes of Digital Eye Strain

The time we spend looking at computer screens (or a mobile phone or tablet) is on the up. One study showed that UK adults spend an average of 4hrs 45minutes engaged with a screen each day. For people who work in an office environment, this is likely to be a significant underestimate.

Sub-optimal viewing distances and angles and the long close exposure to specific wavelengths of light that is characteristic of screentime is having a detrimental effect on the health of our eyes. Exacerbating factors may include poor lighting, screen glare, and even posture.

Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain

According to a study by the American Optometric Association, the most common symptoms of digital eye strain are:

  • Asthenopia
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Neck and shoulder pain

Other symptoms may include screen-induced squinting (bad for tension headaches) and reduced blink rate which can make your eyes drier.

Treatment of Digital Eye Strain

In their academic roundup of the phenomenon, Digital Eye Strain Prevalence, Measurement and Amelioration,  Amy L Sheppard and James S Wolffsohn point to the ameliorative effects of blink training, wrap around goggles that reduce exposure to blue light, and the management of symptoms by eye care practitioners.

At the Dry Eye Spa, we can provide eye care and maintenance to members of your team  who may be experiencing the symptoms of digital eye strain. Treatment can lead to reduced absences and increased productivity in your work force.

Good screen habits and careful eye treatment will lead to better results from team members who necessarily spend a lot of their day in front of a computer screen.
